What does collegiate mock trial look like?

Collegiate mock trial is a competitive academic activity in which students simulate real courtroom trials by acting as attorneys and witnesses. Teams compete against other universities by presenting both prosecution/plaintiff and defense sides of a fictional legal case provided each year by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA).

During competitions, students deliver opening statements, conduct direct and cross examinations, make objections using the rules of evidence, and present closing arguments before a panel of judges. Witnesses portray characters from the case packet while attorneys build legal arguments and courtroom strategy.

Tournaments typically consist of multiple rounds over the course of a weekend, with teams competing against programs from across the country. At the end of the season, qualifying teams advance through regional and national championship tournaments hosted by AMTA.

Beyond competition, collegiate mock trial helps students develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork, leadership, and quick decision-making in high-pressure environments.

How can I join USC Mock Trial?

Do I need mock trial experience?

Accepted Answer

No prior mock trial experience is required! Once accepted into South Carolina Mock Trial, members are taught everything they need to know to succeed in the program. We are committed to helping students develop their advocacy, public speaking, and trial skills regardless of their previous experience level.

What is the time commitment?

South Carolina Mock Trial is a significant commitment, but many of our members successfully balance mock trial alongside internships, student organizations, service opportunities, and academics.

Teams typically practice three times per week for two to three hours, with practice schedules varying depending on the team and its captains. As tournaments approach, practices often become longer or more frequent, and may include both internal and external scrimmages.

Members are also expected to compete throughout the semester, with each team attending multiple tournaments across the southern region.

Each team competes in multiple tournaments throughout both the fall and spring semesters. Our program primarily competes against schools within the southern region, with most competitions taking place over two days on the weekends. During tournaments, teams compete in multiple rounds against universities from across the country with opportunities to win individual and team awards.

Should I join if I am not pre-law?

Absolutely! You do not need to plan on pursuing a legal career to be a part of South Carolina Mock Trial. The skills developed through mock trial extend far beyond the courtroom, including critical thinking, public speaking, teamwork, and the ability to think confidently under pressure.

Some of the highest-performing members in our program have come from nontraditional majors and backgrounds outside of pre-law. Mock trial is for anyone looking to challenge themselves and grow both personally and professionally.
